The “Art of the Aviary,” an exhibit by the Green Bay Art Colony, soars into the Mulva Cultural Center in De Pere Wednesday, June 18, with a public reception 6-8 pm. Friday, June 20. The exhibit runs through Aug. 13.
Nineteen local art professionals from the all-women Green Bay Art Colony will offer their unique interpretations of the world of birds. Works in watercolor, oil, textile, photography, mixed media, porcelain, clay and more will celebrate our featured friends in unexpected ways.
Participating artists are Carrie Dorski, Maureen Blaney Flietner, Linda Glass, Barbi Gossen, Miwako “Binky” Heverly, Lisa Jansen, Karen Kjell, Daniela Kouzov, Ginny Laukka, Sandy Melroy, Naomi Moes-Jenkins, Leah Norem, Heather Peterman, Suzy Pfeifer, Nancy Pierce, Janice Schonke, Barb Teerlinck, Cynthia Tumpach, and Maria Victoria Walker (Lila Brochá).
For viewers who want to bring that avian creativity home, some of the exhibit artwork will be available for purchase. Other art pieces by the exhibitors will be for sale at the Mulva gift shop during the exhibit’s run.
Children get extra opportunities to enjoy the bird art experience with two Second Saturday hands-on workshops at the Mulva. Led by members of the Green Bay Art Colony, these drop-in summer art activities are free.
From noon-3 p.m. July 12, “good energy artist” Heather Peterman will guide youngsters in decorating one-of-a-kind mini birdhouses. The kids will use colorful acrylic paints to make their design fresh, new, and ready for display at home. The project also will work great as a refuge for any garden critter they make in the August workshop.
From noon-3 p.m. Aug. 9, national award-winning sculptor Naomi Moes-Jenkins will lead children in creating a colorful bird or a beautiful bug. The kids will have fun twisting, turning, and sculpting non-toxic air dryclay. Then they can use markers to put on the finishing touches. A day later and their project is dry and ready for display at your home.
Through this exhibit and these workshops, the Green Bay Art Colony continues the mission of its predecessor group the Green Bay Art Club to inspire each other, promote art appreciation, and encourage emerging artists.
