Virginia Janssen is a Green Bay artist and teacher, originally from Milwaukee. She works in a variety of mediums, from painting to textiles to mosaic and bronze sculpture. Janssen holds a BFA in Painting from the University of Colorado, and a certificate from La Scuola Dell’Arte Della Medaglia in Rome, Italy. She is known for her medallic sculpture and
bas-relief bronzes.
More recently, Janssen has turned to mosaics, clay, and textiles. Inspired by the materials themselves, Janssen is partial to organic shapes and every kind of texture. Thematically, her work deals with our connections to nature and each other, and with the spaces we call home, which contain our emotional, spiritual and physical support systems.
Janssen has been teaching art to someone for most of her life, which keeps her motivated to explore methods of making. There is nothing like watching others discover the joy found in personal artistic expression. After many years of teaching art to children aged 4-14, she most recently served as an adjunct instructor at St. Norbert College in De Pere.
